NCC runners Kyle Brady (Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) and Jacob Austin (Hinckley-Big Rock H.S.) rank second and tenth in their respective events (800m & 5,000m), with Brady having a great opportunity to challenge for the NCAA 5k title.

College Update: Howard Wins Big East 800m Crown

February.20.2010 · Leave a Comment

With the majority of college conference meets taking place next weekend, this weekend’s college highlights are rather quiet compared to weeks past.  Here are the notable results:

Big East Championships – Results

Notre Dame middle distance standout Jack Howard (Libertyville H.S.) set the goal to win the Big East 800m title, and the ND senior did just that, cruising to the title in 1:51.24, winning by nearly a second.  Howard used a big kick to outdistance himself from the rest of the field.  Scoring two more points for his team, Howard also placed seventh in the men’s 500m dash in 1:04.37.

On the women’s side, Notre Dame’s Rebecca Tracy (Barrington H.S.) placed fifth in a tactical women’s mile race, kicking home in 4:55.47.  In the women’s 1,000m event, Tracy’s ND teammate Abby Higgins (Benet Academy) placed sixth in 2:50.23.  Meanwhile in the women’s distance medley relay, Molly Sullivan (York H.S.) and Tracy teamed up to guide the Fighting Irish to a fourth place finish in 11:39.42.

Cardinal Classic – Results

The North Central College men continued their dominating performances this indoor season, running well at another home invitational.  This time, the Cardinals went 1-2-3 in the men’s mile, as Ryan Carrigan (Chatham-Glenwood H.S.) won in 4:16.51, while teammates Kyle Brady (Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) and Alex Knoblach (Rock Island Alleman H.S.) ran 4:17.89 and 4:18.14.  Wheaton College freshman Parker Thompson (Tremont H.S.) placed fourth in 4:19.48.

In the men’s 800m dash, NCC senior Jacob Austin (Hinckley-Big Rock H.S.) won in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:54.24, while junior Mike Spain (Schaumburg H.S.) returned from illness with a runner-up performance in the men’s 5,000m run, crossing the line in 14:51.02.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 3,000m run, NCC junior Cody McCullough (Manteno H.S.) won the event in 8:55.16, while Wheaton College sophomore Collin Christensen (Wheaton North H.S.) placed second in a strong time of 8:56.94.

EIU Friday Night Special – Results

While many of the top distance runners from the schools competing sat out, some other runners got a chance to shine.  In the men’s 3,000m run, University of Illinois freshman Jordan Herbert (York H.S.) won in a solid time of 8:36.17.  Herbert simply ran away from the field, while EIU sophomore Matt Feldhake (St. Anthony’s H.S.) finished fourth in 8:44.10.

Meanwhile, EIU senior Erin O’Grady (Prospect H.S.) won the women’s mile in 5:01.05.  She simply outran the competition, closing strong over the final 400 meters, claiming the top prize. University of Illinois freshman Courtney Yaeger won the women’s 3,000m run in 10:23.25.

Iowa Invitational – Results

On the men’s side, University of Iowa middle distance runner Nick Kuczwara (York H.S.) won the men’s 600m dash in 1:19.74.  Kuczwara’s performance is his second big-time performance in as many weeks.

In the men’s mile, Iowa Hawkeye Mark Battista (Lincoln Way Central H.S.) placed second in the event, running a solid mark of 4:16.37.  Following Battista, Elmhurst master’s runner Charlie Kern placed fourth in an exceptional time of 4:21.88.

Other Highlights

University of Wisconsin standout Caitlin Comfort (Peoria Notre Dame H.S.) won the women’s 5,000m run at the Red and White Open.  Comfort won in a convincing 17:08.55.

College Update: Laskowske Provisionally Qualifies, Ulrey Breaks Four

February.15.2010 · 1 Comment

As collegiate conference action quickly approaches, this was the last weekend for the huge mega meets that college runners often run their fastest at during the indoor season.  From coast to coast, top teams and individuals took part and ran some phenomenal marks.  Here’s what took place among Illinois’ best.

Iowa State Classic – Results

The biggest meet of the weekend in the United States came up with some big time results.  The best Illinois performance of the weekend came from Minnesota senior Amy Laskowske (Palatine H.S.).  Laskowske, who’s had an up and down indoor season thus far, came up with a big third place finish in the women’s 5,000m run, running a provisional qualifying mark of 16:25.12.

On the men’s side, Iowa freshman Jeff Thode (Conant H.S.) won his heat of the men’s mile in a new PR of 4:06.89.  Thode’s Iowa teammate, Nick Kuczwara (York H.S.), won his heat of the men’s 800m dash in a great time of 1:50.84.  In Kuczwara’s same heat, Illinois frosh Kyle Engnell (Lockport Twp.) placed second in 1:52.79, Illinois’ Graham Farnsworth (Wheaton North H.S.) placed third in 1:53.17 and Eastern Illinois’ Sean Wiggan (Waubonsie Valley H.S.) placed fifth in 1:53.96.

Mixed Results for Illinois Athletes at Reebok BIG

February.7.2010 · Leave a Comment

The Reebok Boston Indoor Games took place Saturday evening and the results for Illinois athletes was mixed.  The most pre-race attention was focused on Benet Academy senior McKinzie Schulz, who ran in the high school girls mile.  Despite a strong effort, Schulz couldn’t compete with the blazing early pace, finishing seventh overall in 5:05.67.  Going against other top middle distance talent who have raced often this indoor season, Schulz competed well.  She’ll be ready this outdoor season when it matters most.

Unfortunately, other Illinois distance runners didn’t have the races they were hoping for either.  Olympian Christin Wurth-Thomas (Bloomington, IL) finished a disappointing ninth in the women’s 3,000m run.  Wurth-Thomas simply couldn’t match the strength of the top runners, fading over the final laps to a 9:04.75 time.  In the men’s mile, Daniel Huling (Geneva, IL) did not finish the race.

In the men’s master’s mile, Naperville Running Company owner Kris Hartner placed 15th overall in 4:44.40.

In the sprint/hurdle events, former Mt. Carmel H.S. standout Eric Mitchum placed a surprising second in the men’s 60 meter hurdles.  Mitchum crossed the line in a quick 7.61 seconds, only trailing Olympian Terrence Trammell, who won in 7.49.

Meanwhile, former Wheaton North H.S. state champion Adam Harris placed eighth in the men’s 60 meter dash.  Harris ran a solid time of 6.74, showing good signs of early season speed that will hopefully lead him to a successful outdoor season.

Two athletes with Champaign, Illinois connects ran well.  Current Champaign-based athlete Bershawn Jackson won the men’s 400 meter dash in an impressive 46.86, while former Illini Perdita Felicien earned a runner-up finish in the women’s 60m hurdles with her 8.01 performance.  Damu Cherry outleaned Felicien at the line, winning by .01.

ICCCP Girls Top 15 Weekend Wrap Up

September.13.2009 · Leave a Comment

A strong weekend of competition, led by IL#9 Hoffman Estates’ big week, should mix up the rankings quite a bit.  See which teams impressed and which teams fell, as the cross country season starts to really heat up in Illinois.

ICCCP Girls Top 15

1. Palatine -Did not compete in an invitational, but did beat IL#9 Hoffman Estates in a close dual meet Thursday, edging the Hawks 27-28.

2. Geneva – Geneva took their “B” team to Peoria over the weekend to compete in the Peoria Woodruff Invitational.  Kelly Shogren, who is their number two runner this year, finished fourth overall in 18:01, while their next best finisher was 63rd overall.

3. York -Did not compete.

4. Prospect – Another great performance from freshman Brooke Wolfe led the Knights to a second place finish at the Lake Park Invitational.  Wolfe placed second overall in 17:26, while Prospect finished in the runner-up position, losing to IL#9 Hoffman Estates 50-65.  Annette White had another strong race as well, finishing fourth overall.

5. Naperville North – North traveled to the Peoria Woodruff hoping to come out on top, and while running an excellent team race, finished second overall to IL#10 Hinsdale Central 86-122.  Naperville North scored 17, 22, 26, 28, 29, 37 for their top six runners, showing that pack running is their strength, but they need a low number up top if they hope to contend for a trophy later this fall.

He might be done with his track season for a while, but Lincoln-Way Central H.S. freshman Lukas Verzbicas (photo courtesy of www.photorun.net) is not done racing.  Verzbicas is entered in the Shamrock Shuffle 8k this coming Sunday, a race where he placed eleventh last year in 25:31 as an eighth grader.  Verzbicas set the distance running world on fire this indoor track season, winning the two-mile at Nike Indoor Nationals in 8:57.44, while shattering the U.S. high school indoor 5,000m record in 14:18.42.

While he isn’t the favorite to win the Shuffle, Verzbicas certainly has shown the talent to make a run at a top three finish.  He is significantly faster than he was last year, and if he can chop off about ten seconds a mile he should finish in the top five.  However, running a specific time might be thrown out the window, as snow and sleet is expected Saturday evening to Sunday morning in Chicago.
