He might be done with his track season for a while, but Lincoln-Way Central H.S. freshman Lukas Verzbicas (photo courtesy of www.photorun.net) is not done racing. Verzbicas is entered in the Shamrock Shuffle 8k this coming Sunday, a race where he placed eleventh last year in 25:31 as an eighth grader. Verzbicas set the distance running world on fire this indoor track season, winning the two-mile at Nike Indoor Nationals in 8:57.44, while shattering the U.S. high school indoor 5,000m record in 14:18.42.
While he isn’t the favorite to win the Shuffle, Verzbicas certainly has shown the talent to make a run at a top three finish. He is significantly faster than he was last year, and if he can chop off about ten seconds a mile he should finish in the top five. However, running a specific time might be thrown out the window, as snow and sleet is expected Saturday evening to Sunday morning in Chicago.

Lukas decided to drop out the night before. Good move! The weather was terrible. Everyone probably ran 30 seconds to a minute slower because of the wind, snow, ice, etc….
